'Peaslake's little store with a big reputation in the heart of the Surrey Hills'
Environmental Policy Our shop is located within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and we all treasure the woods, the fresh air and the views across the Hurtwood. At Peaslake Village Store we understand it is our responsibility to reduce the impact we have on the environment. We aim to minimise waste and to reuse and recycle as much as possible. During the last couple of years we have reduced our rubbish for landfill down to a third of all our waste. We are now recycling all of the cardboard as well as plastics and metal cans. Raluca is even composting the vegetable scraps from our kitchen for use on her allotment. We are also looking for ways to offer recycling facilities for plastic bottles and drink cans during the busy weekends when the village is busy with visitors. Many of you that have shopped at the store over the last few months would have noticed we are trying to reduce the use of plastic carrier bags. The detrimental effect these have on the environment is widely documented and we have decided to reduce their use. Instead we offer cardboard boxes that can be recycled, biodegradable carrier bags or we can use ‘bags for life’. We aim to keep our use of energy to a minimum and we plan and manage working processes taking into account the best use of resources. All our staff are encouraged to aim for good environmental practices. As a local business we try to use local suppliers as much as possible, in a quest for best quality produce and also to achieve ‘low food miles’.
The shop employs local staff, who do not have to travel long distances and we try to promote local employment.
